Zoe Wilde: Inspiring the Next Generation of Hairdressers at Wodonga TAFE
Friday, 4 April 2025
At Wodonga TAFE, students don’t just learn hairdressing skills—they discover their passion, gain confidence, and develop industry-ready expertise under the guidance of dedicated educators like Zoe Wilde. As a full-time hairdressing teacher, Zoe is committed to helping students unlock their potential and carve out successful careers in the industry.
From Industry Expert to Educator
Zoe’s journey into teaching began when she completed her TAE (Certificate IV in Training and Assessment - TAE40122) at just 22 years old, driven by a passion for education. However, it wasn’t until seven years later, in 2017, that she was invited as a guest artist for photography students, teaching them how to capture editorial hair and makeup.
That experience sparked an unexpected opportunity—Zoe was asked to run a hair-up styling workshop with a racing theme for Certificate III Hairdressing students (SHB30416). From that moment, her role at Wodonga TAFE gradually expanded. She took on more teaching units within the hairdressing courses, ultimately leading her to become a full-time educator delivering both the Certificate II Salon Assistant (SHB20216) and Certificate III Hairdressing (SHB30416) courses.
A Passion for Teaching
For Zoe, teaching is about more than just passing on technical skills. It’s about witnessing students grow, overcoming self-doubt, and gaining the confidence to say, "I nailed it."
“Hairdressing isn’t just a job—it’s personal,” she says. “Seeing students transform, not just in their skills but in their confidence and motivation, is the most rewarding part of what I do.”
Supporting Student Success
Watching students develop their talents and push through challenges is what makes Zoe’s role so fulfilling. She believes that education is about more than just mastering a trade—it’s about personal growth, creativity, and resilience.
Her philosophy is simple: everyone has the potential to succeed with the right support and encouragement. She is passionate about creating an inclusive and empowering learning environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, learn from them, and build their confidence along the way.
Advice for Future Hairdressers
Zoe encourages anyone looking to join the hairdressing industry to:
- Stay curious and keep learning.
- Be patient—mastery takes time.
- Embrace challenges and learn from setbacks.
- Seek inspiration and surround yourself with mentors.
- Believe in yourself—your background does not limit your potential.
She also understands that taking on study can feel daunting, especially for those who may have struggled academically in the past. Having dropped out of high school herself, she knows firsthand that your past does not define your future.
“If you’re passionate about something, don’t let fear hold you back,” she says. “Study can seem overwhelming, but if you’re truly committed, you’ll find the motivation to push through any challenge.”
Inspired by Creativity and Innovation
Zoe finds inspiration in legendary designer Alexander McQueen, particularly his fearless approach to creativity. His quote, “There is no way back for me now, I’m going to take you on journeys you’ve never dreamed possible,” resonates deeply with her.
“For me, teaching and hairdressing are about taking students on a journey—helping them push boundaries, take risks, and strive for something extraordinary,” she explains.
