Demystifying Heat Pumps: PICAC Upskilling Plumbers Program held at Wodonga TAFE

Thursday, 20 February 2025

Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC) have recently hosted a successful session of the Demystifying Heat Pumps training at Wodonga TAFE’s Trades Training Centre! Created to equip local plumbers and 4th year apprentices with the knowledge and skills to install energy-efficient hot water system heat pumps and delivered as part of the Upskilling Plumbers Program, this hands-on workshop provided invaluable insights into the operation, installation, and efficiency considerations of modern heat pump technology. Heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular in Australia to reduce energy consumption and green house emissions. They can be used in a range of settings, including homes, apartments and commercial settings.

The session attracted a strong turnout of licensed plumbers, as well as 4th year apprentices eager to expand their expertise in sustainable plumbing solutions. Led by an experienced PICAC trainer, the workshop covered crucial topics, including heat pump sizing, installation best practices, compliance requirements and discussed how geographical factors in Victoria impact efficiency.

One of the standout features of the training was its hands-on approach, allowing participants to engage with real-world scenarios and troubleshoot common installation challenges. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of energy efficiency requirements and how to optimize heat pump performance.

Lead Teacher Plumbing, David McEvoy, emphasised the importance of staying ahead in the ever-evolving plumbing industry: "At Wodonga TAFE, we are committed to ensuring access to industry-leading training that keeps pace with new technologies and best practices. This training is a great example of how we help plumbers and apprentices adapt to energy-efficient solutions, ensuring they have the skills to meet the demands of a changing industry."

This fully funded program, supported by Solar Victoria and the Victorian Government, continues to make advanced training accessible to plumbing professionals across the state. With sessions held at various metropolitan and regional locations, including Wodonga TAFE, the Upskilling Plumbers Program is playing a vital role in preparing the industry for the future of energy-efficient water heating.
