Doug Aplin: Passionate About Design and Empowering the Next Generation at Wodonga TAFE

Wednesday, 22 January 2025

Doug Aplin is a dedicated teacher of Graphic Design, whose diverse career journey and passion for hands-on learning inspire students to reach their full potential.

After completing a Cert IV and Diploma in Digital Media, he started his career as a Flash UX developer. Doug went on to complete a Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts, furthering his expertise in the field. Doug’s career spanned various roles, from working as a freelance designer to marketing and design agencies. His most unique venture was transitioning into product design, where he helped design tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags for a national outdoor brand.

Doug’s creativity also extended to the music industry—he toured Australia twice with a band and recorded an EP. Alongside his wife, he launched D&D Letterpress, a business that produces bespoke stationery using 1950s printing presses. Since relocating their studio from Sydney to Thurgoona in 2015, Doug has welcomed students into his studio to give them hands-on experience in the broader printing industry.

Doug’s enthusiasm for teaching comes from the satisfaction of watching students develop confidence in their skills. “The best part of my job is watching students gain confidence and seeing their pride when they successfully complete tasks,” he says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see them grow and take ownership of their learning.”

He is especially drawn to working with students from diverse backgrounds. “Each one brings a unique perspective, and it’s fascinating to see how their individual experiences shape their approach to their work,” Doug explains. This diversity keeps him inspired, ensuring that he continually learns from his students.

Doug’s personal philosophy revolves around nurturing curiosity and encouraging students to take risks. He believes in creating a “give anything a go” attitude, which empowers students to become not only skilled professionals but also confident, lifelong learners.

Doug’s advice for anyone entering the design industry is simple: get as much experience as you can. “Even if your local footy club needs a newsletter design or your cousin needs birthday invitations, say yes,” Doug suggests. “Those projects, while small, give you valuable experience in both design and working with clients. And the more experience you gain, the stronger your portfolio will become.”

For those worried about the challenges of studying, Doug has reassuring words: “TAFE is a supportive environment. We are here to rally for you, and we provide support tailored to your learning style. There’s no need to be afraid, because you’ll never regret the experience and growth that comes with it.”

Doug believes that Wodonga TAFE’s approach to learning is what sets it apart. “Here, we don’t just tell you how to do things—we get our hands dirty. Whether it’s printmaking, prototyping packaging, or hands-on design projects, we focus on real-world learning,” he explains. “It’s about experimenting together, troubleshooting, and sharing both successes and failures. This collaborative, hands-on approach is what makes learning at Wodonga TAFE unique and effective.”
