Wodonga TAFE's training salon recognised for reducing landfill waste by 95%
Wednesday, 25 September 2024
Wodonga TAFE's training salon is proudly being recognised throughout the region for their collaborative efforts with Sustainable Salons - who have been instrumental in sustainable waste management systems within the Hairdressing industry.
Wodonga TAFE's training salon now recycles up to 95% of resources including excess chemicals such as peroxide and hair colour, which is neutralised into recycled water and used in construction and roadworks. Plastics are also repurposed and recycled into closed-loop products such as outdoor furniture, coasters, sunglasses, combes and more.
Sustainable Salons is approaching a decade of operations and have been instrumental in placing importance on sustainability practices in salons across Australia. Their systems have helped Wodonga TAFE contribute to their worthy cause of recycling and selling repurposed products, the proceeds of which are donated Oz Harvest and KiwiHarvest, funding over 5,500 meals for disadvantaged people every month.
Wodonga TAFE Teacher Zoe Wilde was interviewed on ABC Goulburn Murray on Monday 23 September about the latest efforts and how Wodonga TAFE has adapted to the new waste management system. She spoke on the impact the new partnership has had on the education of students, who have been advocating for more sustainable practices in the Salon.
