Community Services Students "Talking Trash" for Awareness
Monday, 9 September 2024
Certificate II in Community Services (CHC22015) students held their 'Trash Talk' event on Friday 6 September 2024. As part of their course, the students learn about being an effective volunteer. To do this they undertake a volunteering activity. Wodonga TAFE’s Environmental Strategic Project Lead, Emma O’Donovan, was invited to speak to the class, and they came up with a plan together to help spread awareness for correct waste disposal around campus.
In the lead up to the event, the students spent time learning about and understanding the huge problems that are created with items that needlessly end up on landfill. These items over time will slowly breakdown emitting harmful chemicals into our atmosphere which is contributing to our global warming crisis.
The students created an engaging information display and online survey, challenging staff and students about their knowledge on the new 4-bin system and other environmental sustainability initiatives occurring across the TAFE. With instant feedback from the survey results, this tool was a great way to educate others with many staff and students surprised with some of the answers.
On the last check in, students had received participation from over 100 people in the survey, which is an amazing effort in sharing this important message.
