MTA Students Take on the Winton 300 – Real-World Experience in Action!

Wednesday, 14 August 2024

This weekend, our students faced the ultimate test of their mechanical skills at the Winton 300, turning theory into practice under race-day pressure!

Their dedication shone through as they worked tirelessly to ensure that the Motorsports Training Australia V8 Falcon Brute Ute and Hyundai Veloster Turbo were both prepared for every practice and qualifying session of the weekend, before the final 100 lap, 300km endurance race on Sunday afternoon.

The team battled the entire race to keep the Veloster in the fight, encountering engine control issues mid-race that never showed during any previous testing sessions. But thanks to the students’ quick thinking and problem-solving skills during tyre and fuel pit stops, they were able to repair the issues, safely return the car to the track, and finish the race successfully!

Despite an electrical gremlin that forced a DNF on the Ute after half-race distance, the team gained invaluable hands-on experience that you just can’t get in the classroom.

Our course goes beyond the classroom by giving students real, hands-on experience they can't get anywhere else," said Steve McDonald, MTA Teacher. "It's not just about completing assessments—it's about gaining a deep, comprehensive understanding of what it takes to be a mechanical technician in motorsport. Motorsport is more than just being a mechanic; it’s about mastering a range of technical skills that are crucial in the industry. Events like the Winton 300 give our students the chance to apply these skills in a real-world environment, allowing them to see the full scope of their education in action."

"Having the students on board was fantastic,"
said Brad Gartner, driver of the #1 Hyundai Veloster. "Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn really made a difference, and it was great to see them tackle the challenges with such determination. They were an integral part of the team, and we couldn’t have done it without them!”.

"This was an amazing opportunity to apply what we've learned in the classroom to a real race environment. Working on the cars and seeing our efforts pay off, even with the challenges we faced, was incredibly rewarding. I can’t wait to sign up for the Certificate IV course and be involved in the race again next year". – Tiaki Pomana, Certificate III Motor Sport Technology student.

A massive thank you to everyone who made this weekend possible, and a special shoutout to our drivers Brad Gartner and Tabitha Ambrose in the Veloster, and Richard Whyte and Grant Phillips in the Ute, for their incredible work behind the wheel. The mix of youthful energy from Brad and Tabitha and the seasoned expertise from Richard and Grant created a perfect balance for our team. The young drivers were a great fit, relating closely to our students as they’re all starting out in their careers, while the experienced drivers provided invaluable guidance to keep stress levels down.
