Congratulations to former Wodonga TAFE Certificate III in Landscape Construction (AHC30916) Apprentice Ryan Leman, who has been nominated for the 2020 Victorian Training Awards for Apprentice of the Year! Ryan is currently working for Stuart Gordon Landscaping & Paving Specialists as a Foreman, having completed his apprenticeship in July 2019.
Landscape Construction involves using a variety of flora and ornamental features to make a space more attractive, joyful and useful environment. Ryan decided to study Landscaping due to his friendship with Stuart Gordon (Stu), they had been part of the same shooting club for a number of years, and over that time Ryan became more aware of the type of work that he and his business completed. Ryan began the job working casually a few days a week in 2015, before officially beginning his apprenticeship in 2016, Ryan notes his reason choosing to study Landscaping “I’ve always loved being outdoors, whether that’s going camping or 4WDing with mates, after having learning more about Landscaping through Stu, I knew it would be perfect for me, with everyday being different.”
Ryan is dedicated in his application of skills and knowledge gained through his apprenticeship and thrives in discussing the latest projects he’s been working on and potential future projects. Ryan understood the benefit that is gained through in-class learning and appreciated how TAFE not only teaches you how to complete a task, but also why the task is completed that way. “The combination of on-the-job training and in-class helped me to become more confident of my own ability, to ask questions if I’m unsure of something and helped me understand the importance of time-management. All of these skills are used in my day-to-day working life as a Landscaper.”
Ryan is keen to show that he would be a positive role model for both TAFE and the Landscaping industry if he won Apprentice of the Year, helping to promote the industry, and to showcase that high-quality landscaping work occurs all across the country rather than just in metropolitan areas.
We are excited to see how Ryan gets on and will keep you updated!
