Are you a business owner? Then you need to read about your Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) requirements!

Friday, 23 August 2019

Wodonga TAFE have recruited a new OH&S trainer, who is ready and available to service all businesses/organisations across the local region.

As a business owner, this Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Initial OHS Training course is suitable for you or your employees, regardless of the industry you operate in.

Under section 21 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, an employer must, so far is reasonably practical, provide and maintain a safe working environment for employees without risks to health and provide safe methods of work.

Under section 25 of the Act, each employee must:

  • Take reasonable care for their own health and safety
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of people who may be affected by the employees acts or omissions at a workplace

To summarise, this Act requires both employers and employees to both provide and act safely in a workplace, while identifying and making reasonable steps to minimise an identified risk.

In order to fulfil this, businesses must consult with workers (as far as reasonably practical) about work health and safety matters, and workers must report all risks. Having a HSR within your organisation, who represents employees and brings health and safety issues to the attention of the employer is important to ensuring that risks are properly reported through the correct channels, and that the risk is mitigated.

HSR’s are vital for employers as they:

  • Understand the views and concerns of other employees
  • Create formal channels and processes for raising issues/or ideas
  • Can exercise special powers while representing your organisation.

By having correctly trained HSR’s, you can help work towards developing your organisations health and safety procedures to promote an organisational culture where health and safety is a commitment to all. If you need to train some new HSR’s our NA14HSRI - Health and Safety Representative Initial OHS training course is Worksafe Victoria approved and has course dates available both in October and November.
