Professional Remedial Massage Therapist extends skills with Myotherapy
Tuesday, 4 June 2019
Christian Trebley was a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist and working as a professional in industry when he chose to extend his skills into Myotherapy.
He said it was all a matter of being in the right place at the right time when Wodonga TAFE commenced delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy 22316VIC in the local region.
“I was one of the students in the first intake that started here in Wodonga in 2017”, said Christian. “It was an easy decision to make, as I was able to continue working as a Remedial Massage Therapist whilst studying.”
“To become a Myotherapist from being a Remedial Massage Therapist, I didn’t have to change practice but was able to add on more in-depth skills and extend my knowledge”, said Christian. “This was an unreal choice!”
“And better still, I didn’t have to travel to the city to study!”
The Myotherapy course is set up as blended learning, a deliberate choice by the teaching department at Wodonga TAFE to offer study choices that fitted around the busy schedules of professional therapists. Students in the course are provided with access to an online study platform, and this is combined with monthly face-to-face workshops that are held on weekends. This enabled Christian to fit study around his work week in the busy practice that he is part of in Albury, NSW.
Christian said he came to Remedial Massage Therapy as a career change, choosing this area based partly on his earlier life experience in a semi-professional sports role and visiting therapists throughout that time, so this was something he always thought he wanted to find out more about.
Speaking of his work in the remedial massage therapy sector, Christian said that there was nothing better than helping someone. “To help people is the ultimate goal – the little joys in fixing people is very rewarding”, he said. “And it really is a great career path where you can get straight to work as a professional in your industry. Start with the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy, then continue to build skills with the Diploma of Remedial Massage, and then step up to add more skills with the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy.”
Specifically for qualified Remedial Massage Therapists, the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy provides the opportunity for therapists to advance their training and knowledge to the next level. Stepping up to the Myotherapy qualification provides RMTs with an extension to their skills, focusing on assessment, treatment and prevention of specific musculoskeletal conditions and somatic dysfunction. Various modalities are taught to enhance the restoration and recovery from these conditions via treatment of soft tissues.
Wodonga TAFE is the only regional training provider of the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy, and is now taking applications for the next course which commences in July 2019.
