Education Week comes to a close with Schools Experience Day at TAFE
Tuesday, 28 May 2019
Wodonga TAFE celebrated the end of Education Week by welcoming a large number of New South Wales secondary school students on campus for its second School Experience Day for 2019.
Held across the McKoy campus on Friday 24 May, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, students from Years 11 and 12 in NSW from across the local region made the most of opportunities to participate in hands-on activities, and lunch was also provided to participants and their teachers.
Students chose from a range of industry-focused sessions that included experiences in Allied Health, Community Services, Bakery, Design, Carpentry, Building Design, and Logistics.
They were also privileged to hear first-hand about the journey of a previous student, Bryan Wood, who studied first the Certificate IV and then the Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration with Wodonga TAFE and was awarded as a joint winner of the TAFE’s Student of the Year in 2018.
Bryan spoke to the students of his transition from secondary school to factory work, and then of how he came to choose a course at Wodonga TAFE to make a life change, and then successful employment in industry, and also of creating a design business with a friend. He told the students of his love of gaming as a teen, and talked of how it was this that led him to pursue skills development in 3D design that eventually led to work creating 3D plans and layouts for interior design customers.
Wodonga TAFE’s School Experience Days are an excellent way for secondary school students to experience the opportunities vocational education and training may have for them, and for the TAFE to showcase its campus to students and staff from the secondary sector. The Schools Experience Days also present for students a taste of the hands-on training that is a key part of the way that students learn in a vocational setting, as well as highlighting for them the employment opportunities and education pathways available.
All this in a fun and engaging day out!
Schools Engagement Coordinator, Kelly Dickins was happy with the outcome of the day and is looking forward to running more of these days over the coming year.
“Wodonga TAFE is proud to be a provider of quality education and training. School Experience Days invite secondary school students on campus to get to know Wodonga TAFE and to experience some activities within an industry that may be something they would pursue a future career in.”
“All the students have such a great day when they are here, it really helps them to understand a bit more about TAFE learning just by being able to get in and get involved in some of the activities.”
