TAFE Celebrates Harmony Day

Thursday, 21 March 2019

For the 20th year running, Harmony Day has been celebrated Australia-wide. Renamed ‘Harmony Week’ for 2019, its’ aim is to recognise diversity and inclusion activities that take place across Australia during the entire week from 17 – 23 March.

The ongoing theme for this celebratory event is ‘everyone belongs’ with special focus on inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians regardless of cultural or linguistic background and united by a set of core Australian values.

The colour orange represents Harmony Week, as traditionally it signifies social communication, meaningful conversation, freedom of ideas and mutual respect. By wearing something orange people are able to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Nation.

Yesterday staff and students at Wodonga TAFE shared Harmony Week celebrations and spent time together celebrating our own culture of diversity that we have on campus and within our community networks. Sharing food and celebrating with games and the opportunity to sign your name to the multicultural boards as supporters of Harmony Week, were offered to all who attended.

We are proud to celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians from the traditional owners of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world.

In light of the recent tragedy and devastation of which occurred to our neighbours across the ocean, Wodonga TAFE paid special tribute to New Zealand, holding representations of the NZ flag and sending love and thoughts to those affected.

“Today was an opportunity for staff and students at Wodonga TAFE to come together to share and celebrate inclusiveness and diversity here at TAFE.” Wodonga TAFE’s Student Welfare Officer, Tahlie Jackson spoke of the celebration held yesterday.

“Everyone is here at Wodonga TAFE with a common goal, to learn and to grow, to better themselves and increase their options for participation in work and community.”

“Harmony Day is an opportunity to celebrate the mutual respect shared within our community here at Wodonga TAFE, and to promote a tolerant and culturally diverse society.”

Wodonga TAFE always welcomes, supports and encourages everyone, regardless of cultural beliefs and backgrounds with open arms. We are honoured to be a part of this wonderful inclusive country and to be connected with such a positive multicultural community.
