Wodonga TAFE offers a program ‘Admin on Tap’ for students wanting to gain employment in office administration. Over 12 weeks students complete a range of units from the Certificate III in Business Administration (Education) BSB30915.
This program is more than just a course as it focuses more on aiding the students to be work-ready by incorporating work experience into the classroom learning. Participants are offered two days of on-campus studying alongside one day per week of industry based work experience, making up the 3 day per week course.
The program provides supported and online learning opportunities and has been tailored to offer the best chance of employment outcomes to participants. The combination of classroom study with work experience each week gives students the opportunity to put newly learned skills to immediate use. The course covers key areas such as customer service, time management, working with others and document production using current industry-standard software and computer systems.
There are two streams to ‘Admin on Tap’ program, the first being a partnership with Kestrel Recruitment for young students under 24 years of age. Within this stream Kestrel Recruitment source students work placement with the aim that they can then continue into a traineeship in Business Administration. The second stream is tailored for the ‘over 24s’ whereby students are given the same work/study split throughout the course offering them work placement and the opportunity to enhance their employment prospects.
Wodonga TAFE’s Business Administration Teacher and Program Coordinator, Ms Jenny McNally explains, “With the practical experience, students experience first-hand how a business operates while gaining employability skills to enhance their chances of gaining a job.”
“During placement students become part of a work team, show that they are punctual and reliable, and consolidate their communication skills.”
“While in industry, participants become more confident in their customer service, telephone and reception skills, and in the use of a variety of office equipment. They are also able to experience every-day office work and complete tasks such as filing, data entry, mail outs, banking, and petty cash reconciliation – all skills that will place them more confidently into an administration traineeship or an admin assistant role.”
It has long been proven that practical work experience leads to job offers. With this program, students are placed right into the workplace from the get go, giving them the head start they need to start or continue on their career journey.
