Exploring career options with our Work Education students

Wednesday, 6 March 2019

Poppy the Therapy Dog was a special visitor to the classroom recently.

Our students in the Certificate I in Work Education were excited to meet Poppy, who came along with her owner Molly who is an Occupational Therapist. The Work Education students are currently learning about different careers and vocational areas, and the current focus is about careers that work with animals.

Molly introduced Poppy to the students as part of their class learning and explained how Poppy works with her clients in both individual and group therapy programs. The students learned that as a trained Therapy Dog, Poppy provides comfort and affection to people who may be experiencing stress, or who have learning difficulties or a disability, or who may be facing challenges in their life.

Some of the students also took the opportunity to get down and ‘hands-on’ with Poppy, and Poppy also posed for some individual photos with students – much to everyone’s delight!

The Certificate I in Work Education is designed for people with disabilities. Students are supported to improve their work readiness skills, with the course providing a range of practical experiences to enable participants to build skills and knowledge for further education and entry-level employment.
