'Going to the Henty Field Days’: Wodonga TAFE students design for the Natural Fibre Fashion Awards
Tuesday, 18 September 2018
Students from the Fashion Design program at Wodonga TAFE are again putting their best garments forward for the “Natural Fibre Fashion Awards” at the Henty Machinery Field Days this week.
Students in the Certificate III in Clothing and Textile Production and the Certificate IV in Clothing Production courses have submitted their original creations into the ‘Best Garment Designed by a Student’ category of the awards at Henty, to be shown daily as part of the Country Lifestyle Schedule fashion parades.
Wodonga TAFE’s Fashion Design Teacher, Ms Deidre Liston, said the students were making the most of this opportunity to showcase their work at an event of national standard. “A student from Wodonga TAFE has taken out this award for the past four years, so this year’s students have been very keen to take part”, said Ms Liston. “The Natural Fibre Fashion Awards give the students an extra challenge in working to the specifications of the Award, along with showcasing their handiwork to a wider audience.”
The Certificate III students have created their pieces with a contemporary edge inspired from across the 20th century; from 1940’s sailor pants, 60’s shift dresses, the disco era of Studio 54, and the bold dressing of the 1990s, whereas the Certificate IV students have showcased an item from the collection that they have created as part of their course.
“Throughout their course, students completing the Certificate IV create a collection to outfit four people, so they have selected one of these recently-completed garments for their entry”, explained Ms Liston.
“Wodonga TAFE is the only TAFE outside the metropolitan areas to offer Clothing Production and Textile Production courses, so to have our regional students as regular winners in the Awards is great recognition of the quality of our courses and of our students’ skills”, said Ms Liston.
The Natural Fibre Fashion Awards parade runs at 1pm each day of the Field Days, with the judging and winners to be announced on Thursday 20 September 2018.
