Ensuring Student Success with Support Services

Wodonga TAFE has put in place many services that will assist enrolled students to succeed in their chosen study programs. One such service is Academic Learner Support, within which students are given study skills and learning techniques that will help them to achieve great results throughout their course.
There are many reasons why students may need additional help with their studies, such as being of mature age and haven’t utilised study for many years, or English may be an additional language and there is support needed with reading and writing material. Learning difficulties can also be common among students and having support there to assist break through these barriers can really assist with the success of a student’s time at TAFE.
For any enrolled student at Wodonga TAFE, this service can be accessed through teacher referral, individual learning plans, individual sessions, small group sessions and drop-in sessions.
For academic skills there is assistance with:
- Reading
- Writing
- Numeracy (maths)
- Oral communication skills such as class participation, presentations
- Researching and referencing
- Paraphrasing and summarising
- ESL
For study skills there is assistance with:
- Understanding your learning style
- Time management
- Effective note-taking
- Digital literacy
- Assessment and exam prep
- Goal setting
- Memory techniques
- Group work
There are a few different areas offering support, see below for information on each program:
TUTORspace - a free drop-in study centre, located in the LIRNspace (upper level) of Building A at the McKoy Street campus. Tutors are available to students Monday – Friday, to assist with developing Academic or Study Skills. Having problem with homework or an assessment? Need assistance navigating Moodle, or completing research? Just drop in and speak to a specialist.
Studiosity - an online team of subject specialists who can work with students to get them the help they need. Connect live to chat, upload files and work through questions in real time. Tutors available 3pm-late, Sunday to Friday. Want writing feedback on a draft? Send it to Studiosity and get help back within 24 hours.
LIRNspace - more than 30 networked computer workstations with internet access, scanner and printer facilities. An ideal place to study, do research, and complete out-of-class assignments. Discussion spaces available along with access to drink and snack vending machines. For personal study needs after hours and on weekends the David Mann Library (on the La Trobe University campus) is available to Wodonga TAFE students. HelpDesk – can assist students who have any issues with student login or a TAFE computer. If off campus, they can contact Helpdesk during the LIRNspace opening hours for assistance.
