Computer Violations

Computers are available to students in computer rooms and open access areas for study. There are student guidelines in place to ensure students are aware that they are not to remove parts, install or reconfigure the computers, attempt to open the casing of a computer or create a disturbance within the computer labs. These activities are considered a Student Account Violation. If a violation occurs students may be banned from use of TAFE computers and network resources.

Logging Off

As a student it is your responsibility to log off a computer before you leave. If a student fails to do so, and another student sits down and uses the Internet or  email, the student that failed to log off is responsible for any violations that occur while they remain logged on.

Computer Locked

Students are not to lock a computer from use and walk away from it for extended periods of time. If you must leave the computer, save your files, and log off, however, if you will only be away from the computer for a short time and you will remain in the LIRNspace gallery at this time you can save your files, lock the computer and advise the Help Desk staff that you will return soon.

If you find a computer locked in the LIRNspace Gallery and wish to use it, and cannot see anyone claiming it, ask at the Help Desk before using it. Help Desk staff cannot guarantee that your files will remain safe nor that your computer will be available upon your return, but staff will attempt to keep it free, if you let them know.

Moving Computers or Hardware

Please do not remove or move computers or computer hardware. If there is a problem, and a computer needs to be elsewhere or a screen needs to be closer, ask for assistance from the Help Desk staff.

Booting with a Boot Disk is against current Wodonga TAFE policy.

Installing Software or Connecting/Installing Hardware

Unless you are installing software or connecting hardware as part of a class and from within that class session, you are not permitted to install any software or personally owned hardware onto a computer lab or open access area computer. This includes mobile telephones.
LIRNspace computers are equipped with SD Card readers. Where required, there is a micro-SD adapter available for use with these ports.

Download of Inappropriate Material/Music/Files

No inappropriate material, music or computer files can be down loaded to the C drive of a computer in a lab or open access area. Downloads are monitored and inappropriate downloads can result in a breach of security.

Student Account Violations

Students must not use the Internet for personal use including:

  • visiting pornographic sites,
  • illegal activities,
  • accessing live radio,
  • accessing chat rooms, games sites, or any sites that could be deemed offensive,
  • downloading games, programs or large files that affect bandwidth and performance for all students,

  • emailing or giving out email addresses of other students or teachers or staff to any persons or websites
  • using email for threats, hate mail, harassment or illegal purposes
  • logging in to multiple computers at the same time, login anyone else under your login account, give out your login password to anyone else.
  • disturbing other students in open access or computer lab areas by turning up the volume on computers, talking loudly, playing around etc.
  • installing or connecting anything other than a USB device on a Wodonga TAFE computer
  • carrying out technical work on a computer
  • saving files anywhere except for the T drive - see File Management
  • saving any personal files, music, pictures, etc. anywhere except a disk unless you are using them for class purposes
  • using the email to harass other students
  • playing music or sound on a computer without headphones
  • copy copyrighted materials illegally i.e. images, music or other CDs, etc
  • logging in to computers at Wodonga TAFE when you are not a current student of Wodonga TAFE
  • accessing Wodonga TAFE student areas when you are not a current student of Wodonga TAFE
  • breaking the rules of Wodonga TAFE and/or the Student Account Violation Policy

What will happen if I violate these rules?

In some cases, login accounts or resources may be withheld for periods of time, or the Police may be called if it is deemed a criminal offence. Warnings will be given for minor first offences; however, any second offence  will be regarded as a serious offence. For further information talk with your Head of Teaching Department or refer to the Student Account Violation policy.

Other Rules

Food and drink are permitted in the LIRNspace, but please be careful - computer equipment such as keyboards or hard drives can easily be damaged.
