What is NSW Smart and Skilled? 

Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It is helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance in their careers. 

The Smart and Skilled program provides eligible students with Government funding for specific courses in sectors where upskilling and employment is a priority.

Smart and Skilled Eligibility and FAQs

Smart and Skilled Eligibility

Under the Smart and Skilled training program eligibility criteria you must be: 

  • 15 years and over 
  • no longer at school
  • living or working in NSW
  • an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen.

NSW Apprentices and some new-entrant trainees may be eligible for a government subsidy for the training that supports their apprenticeship or traineeship.

What courses do Wodonga TAFE offer under Smart and Skilled?

Wodonga TAFE is currently approved to deliver training in the following courses and regions:  Riverina Region:  Certificate III in Arboriculture AHC30820 Certificate III in Plumbing CPC32420 Certificate III in Sports Turf Management AHC31319


On a case-by-case basis, Wodonga TAFE has previously been approved for delivery in other Apprenticeship qualifications under a cross-border arrangement. For all enquiries in qualifications other than those listed above, please contact us on 1300 698 233.

Enrolment Process

Non-Apprentice/Trainee Students:

As outlined in 'Understanding the application process', the enrolment process is as below:

  1. Complete an online application for the course, using the course links from the 'What courses do Wodonga TAFE offer under Smart and Skilled?' section above.
  2. Complete an online Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) and Digital Skills Assessment
  3. Complete a Smart and Skilled Eligibility Declaration – this will be sent to you to complete digitally
    1. This will include an application to apply for Credit Transfers for your course
  4. Wodonga TAFE will be in contact with you to discuss your course application, career goals and course requirements
  5. Wodonga TAFE will complete a Notification of Enrolment process on the Training Services NSW website.
  6. If you are successful in gaining a place within your chosen course, you will be sent an official offer to Enrol.
  7. You will then need to complete your enrolment into that course.
  8. Once your enrolment has been finalised, a copy of your Notification of Enrolment will be emailed to you.

Apprentices & Trainees

For Apprentice and Trainee enrolments, the process is similar:

  1. Your agreement must first be registered with Training Services NSW
    1. To register this agreement, your employer will need to reach out to an Australian Apprentice Support Network (AASN)
  2. Once this agreement has been received by Wodonga TAFE, a link will be emailed to you to complete your online application and LLN Assessment
  3. Complete a Smart and Skilled Eligibility Declaration – this will be sent to you to complete digitally
    1. This will include an application to apply for Credit Transfers for your course
  4. Wodonga TAFE will be in contact with you to discuss your course application, career goals and course requirements
  5. Wodonga TAFE will complete a Notification of Enrolment Process on the Training Services NSW Website
  6. A Wodonga TAFE trainer will visit yourself and your employer at your workplace to create and sign a Training Plan for your course
  7. Once your enrolment has been finalised, a copy of your Notification of Enrolment and Training Plan will be emailed to you.
Smart and Skilled Course Fees
